What is Accelerated Reading?
Accelerated Reader or AR is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children's independent reading practice. Here is how the program works. Your child chooses and reads a book at or near their Lexile Reading Range and grade level. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the iPad, computer or tablet. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback on the quiz results, which the teacher uses to help guide reading for ongoing reading practice and success.
Students have AR goals each nine weeks. AR point goals are set according to student's Lexile range, grade level and other factors. All students must meet their AR points goal and maintain 80% accuracy in order to be recognized at the nine weeks Award's Day program.
Students may take AR tests Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. while at school. The program does not allow students to take AR tests at home. However, parents may access information about their child's progress through the Home Connect website.
